The “Brave Falcons” completed their third training session this evening in preparation for the start of the new World Cup qualifying cycle. For tonight’s session, the head coach had all players available.
Before training, Igor Nikić spoke to the media and acknowledged Montenegro’s role as favourites in the matches against Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands.
- We’re favourites in both games and we don’t hide from the expectation of taking all six points, but I think we’ll have to show that on the pitch from the first minute. Both teams coming here will hope for a good result, but it’s on us not to allow that. The first match is against Gibraltar and we have to win, and then we’ll analyse the second one, said the Dečić Admiral Bet goalkeeper.
Nikić expects Montenegro’s next two opponents to focus mainly on defending their goal.
- They’ll come here to defend, that’s for sure. We’ll work on that, analyse how to get to the goal as quickly as possible and most likely win the match that way. These kinds of games are demanding for us goalkeepers as well, because nowadays anyone can hurt you on the counter. It’s on me to stay alert; they’ll probably sit deep, and I’ll have to stand high with my back line and read the game. It’s difficult, but I’m preparing.
Once again, coach Prosinečki will not have all of his key players available.
- Savić, Osmajić and Radunović aren’t here, but we have players who’ve been with us for quite a while, there aren’t many new names. We’re all healthy, and the mix of young and experienced players is working very well, added Nikić, who also called on supporters to come in large numbers to back the “Falcons” from the stands on 22 and 25 March.
- I hope the crowd will turn out in big numbers. When we played against Iceland and Türkiye, even in those kinds of conditions, they came to support us, which means a lot to us, so I hope it will be the same this time as well, Nikić concluded.
