Montenegro’s footballers begin a new World Cup qualifying cycle tomorrow at 18:00.
The “Falcons” host Gibraltar in Nikšić, but this time emotions have pushed the match into the background. The reason is the untimely death of Andrija Delibašić.
- We are emotionally drained, especially the players who played with Andrija and know him as a great player and a great man. Still, we somehow have to focus on the match, which on paper looks easy, but won’t be like that. We all have to be 100 percent ready and, if we go into it seriously, it will surely be only Montenegro who decides things. We will also play for Andrija, that gives us an extra impulse to win the match, which is what everyone expects and wants, said Prosinečki at today’s press conference.
Three days after the Gibraltar match, the Faroe Islands will come to the City Stadium in Nikšić.
- In terms of results and everything, especially when they play at home where they’ve often managed to surprise, the Faroes are better than Gibraltar. But we have to beat Gibraltar first, and only then will we talk about the Faroe Islands, Prosinečki stressed.
The coach underlined that the most important thing is for the players to be fully focused on tomorrow’s game.
- Everyone is playing and improving. There used to be total amateurism with them and they would lose by big margins, but we watched some of their matches, for example against Moldova where they played very well (1–1), and you can see they’ve improved. Of course, the key will be how we start the match. There’s no doubt we’re much better, but we have to have the right approach from the first whistle. The boys are aware of that; when it’s been like that, we’ve played some very good games. I believe it will be the same tomorrow, added Prosinečki.
Captain Stevan Jovetić played with Andrija in the national team and could not hide his sadness over the death of his former teammate.
- The atmosphere is sad. Last year we lost Matija Šarkić, now Deli… It’s hard to focus on football, we are all sad, Andrija was a great man, teammate, friend, brother… I still can’t accept what happened, said Jovetić, who also made it clear there will be no relaxation against Gibraltar.
- We will play for our Deli as well. We are preparing for this match, and that’s how it always has to be – as if we’re playing against one of the biggest national teams. We need to set a standard and always stay at that level. It won’t be easy, the first games are always the hardest, everyone expects us to win. Football changes quickly, the ‘small’ teams have improved and the gaps are getting smaller. I don’t think it will be easy, but of course it depends on us. We have to be at our best and I believe we’ll win, said Jovetić.
Tomorrow’s clash at the City Stadium in Nikšić will kick off at 18:00. The refereeing team comes from Portugal and will be led by António Nobre.
