Montenegro’s footballers opened the new World Cup qualifying cycle with a win over Gibraltar.

In an emotional match following the untimely death of Andrija Delibašić, the “Brave Falcons” came from behind to win 3–1. It was by no means an easy task for Robert Prosinečki’s team.

Montenegro started the match offensively; in the 5th minute Stevan Jovetić headed against the crossbar after a move involving Driton Camaj and Stefan Mugoša. Then came the visitors’ response in the 13th minute. After a corner, Igor Nikić reacted awkwardly, allowing Daniel Bent to turn the ball into the net.

Montenegro replied with dangerous shots from Jovetić and Nikola Krstović, then the captain’s effort was stopped on the goal line – all of which was the prelude to the equaliser. After a scramble in the box, Nikola Šipčić battled for the ball and Jovetić struck to level. He celebrated his 37th goal for the national team by running to the bench and lifting the shirt with number 23, worn by Andrija Delibašić.

Gibraltar, however, did not give up. As time went on, the visitors played better and threatened the “Falcons’” goal. Our net did not shake again – but theirs did.

In the 70th minute Marko Tući scored his first goal in the colours of the national team, putting Montenegro on course for victory. Three minutes later, all doubts were removed after a goal from Adam Marušić.

On Tuesday, 25 March, the “Falcons” face a new challenge – they will host the Faroe Islands at the City Stadium in Nikšić.
