Montenegro’s footballers achieved their goal, finishing the March international window in the World Cup qualifiers with a maximum of six points.
After a 3–1 win over Gibraltar, a thriller ending was seen tonight in Nikšić, with the “Falcons” beating the Faroe Islands 1–0 thanks to Edvin Kuč’s goal literally in the last second of the match.
It was a perfect ending to a game marked by a big battle against a tough and disciplined opponent. The Faroe Islands showed a remarkable level of quality, similar to Friday night away to Czechia, where they were also defeated at the end (2–1).
Such a stubborn rival allowed Montenegro possession and initiative, especially in the second half, but not much space in front of their goal. Only in the opening twenty minutes did the “Falcons” easily reach dangerous areas, but the final pass for a real chance was often missing. The best chances fell to Andrija Vukčević, after a great ball from Marko Vešović, and to Stevan Jovetić, whose shot from about fifteen metres went just wide of the right post.
At the other end, the debutant in the “Falcons” shirt, Balša Popović, did not have much to do, except in the 25th minute, when Petur Knudsen shot wide.
The second half brought much more play in the Faroe Islands’ half. Nikola Krstović tried several times, coming closest in the 87th minute with a shot from a tight angle just a few metres out; Jovetić, Kuč and Igor Vujačić also had efforts…
And then, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, the “Falcons” finally broke down the visitors’ wall. Krstović battled in the penalty area, the ball fell to Kuč, who fired it under the crossbar for indescribable celebrations on the pitch and in the stands. As soon as play restarted from the centre, referee Allard Lindhout blew the final whistle.
March’s tasks have thus been successfully completed; the qualifiers now pause until 6 June and the away game against Czechia.
