Celebrated captain of the "Brave Falcons," Mirko Vučinić, was introduced today as the new Head coach of Montenegro's senior national team. A few hours earlier, the Executive Board of the Montenegro Football Association dismissed the previous coach, Robert Prosinečki, and appointed Vučinić.
The former player of Sutjeska, Lecce, Roma, Juventus, and Al Jazira have been part of the "Falcons" coaching staff since January 2022.
- It is a great honor and pleasure to be in this role; I had a strong desire to become the national team coach. From the first day, I have been with the national team, always loving to join the gatherings. For four years, I've been part of the coaching staff, and when President Dejan Savićević called me, I did not hesitate. I promised to give my all and try to improve the results, which haven’t been the best recently. I will demand that players fight and always give their all for the Montenegrin jersey – Vučinić said at a press conference at the House of Football.
The first challenge for the "Falcons" is the October away match against the Faroe Islands in the World Cup qualifiers.
- We will have only three or four days to prepare, which is too little to implement what I aim for. My vision of play is to maintain ball possession, of course, and to play offensively, but we cannot attack all 90 minutes. We must also know how to defend and where to position ourselves at certain moments in the game. I spent a significant part of my career and life in Italy, where a lot of focus is on tactics. Every player knows exactly what to do at any given moment, and I will try to convey that. I believe we will be tactically disciplined. We will always aim for victory, no matter who the rival is. The goal is also to rejuvenate the team because we have talented players, but that doesn’t mean we will change 20 players at once. We’ll do it gradually; it will take time for me and the team to get to know each other better. We should not overburden young players immediately, Vučinić conveyed.
FSCG President Dejan Savićević expressed his hope that Vučinić remains as coach for a long time.
- The Executive Board chose Mirko more or less unanimously. He is someone who significantly contributed to the national team, playing even through pain and with injections. He decided to get into coaching, though I would have preferred if he took my place as president. He has been at the national team for three and a half years, from day one of the national team. He understands the environment and has had top coaches throughout his career – Spalletti, Conte, Ranieri... I hope he extracts all the good things from them and applies them to the national team. I wish him to stay as long as possible. If he didn't have the desire and confidence, he wouldn’t have been the player he was. He surely believes in himself as a coach too, said Savićević.
