The Montenegrin national team held their final training this evening at the “Europa Stadium” ahead of the match against Gibraltar.
Although often seen as the underdog in matches against European teams, Gibraltar currently represents a very important rival for the “falcons.”
- Considering that we are in a period of poor results, every match is important for us, regardless of whether it’s against Gibraltar or Spain. I believe we will give our all to come away with three points. Our rival is dangerous on the counterattack; they have a good transition. We have been working on that, and I believe we will prevent them from achieving their intentions, said coach Mirko Vučinić at tonight’s press conference.
Montenegro defeated Gibraltar 3:1 in March of this year in Nikšić, but the guests provided strong resistance at that time.
- From that first match, we learned that we naively conceded a goal. We were not focused, and we must improve that. I repeat, every match is extremely important for us. I believe the rival will defend in two blocks, but I hope we can impose our rhythm and style of play. Concentration, desire, will, and being united is the recipe for victory," explained Vučinić, who is confident that the "Falcons" are of higher quality than tomorrow's rival. Every defeat hurt, but I think that in our situation, this one would hurt us a lot. I don't want to underestimate Gibraltar, but I think we are the better team, and if we deliver our maximum, we will win the match. We need to enter every duel with full strength, not at 100%, but at 101 percent, the coach stated.
Midfielder Marko Janković does not wish to frame future matches for the "Falcons" as a "now or never" situation.
- We are going through a period of changes and struggling with injuries, so I don't think there's a need to raise any panic. Far from it, we are not looking for excuses, but these are facts. We are not a selection that has 100 players; we feel it when we are missing two. The most important thing is to show that we improve from game to game, that there is some idea in our play with the new coach. It takes some time for that to come together. So I say, it won’t be a tragedy in case of a bad result; better teams have struggled in Gibraltar, and football will continue regardless, Janković believes.
Midfielder of Qarabag returns to the team after a break due to injury.
- I’ve recovered from injury, everything is as it should be, and I played 90 minutes against Chelsea. We are achieving good results in Qarabag, and that definitely affects my confidence. As I have done all these years playing for the national team, I will give my all and make an effort to adhere to all the coach’s ideas. We’ll see how much that will be enough, but I certainly hope for a victory, Janković emphasized.
